The science behind our inks

We take great pride in our manufacturing process, and we have built the sites around precision, quality and consistency in every batch of ink we produce.

Four stages, every batch

Whatever the grade, a batch goes through the same four stages in the same order, so the ink you order next year runs like the ink on your press today.

  1. Loose pigment powders in red, orange, green and blue scattered across a white surface

    Raw material selection

Every batch starts with raw materials chosen, tested and approved by our own chemists and scientists. Nothing is weighed before it has passed.

  2. Blue and amber ink clouding through a clear liquid as it disperses

    Precision mixing

Each ingredient is measured and mixed with precision and accuracy on current equipment. That is what makes a formulation repeatable rather than approximately right.

  3. A gloved hand pipetting a sample into a rack of vials

    Quality control

Technicians, engineers and operators work alongside the chemists, testing from raw material inspection to finished product. A batch is not released until it matches.

  4. Flasks of coloured solutions on a marble bench, seen from above

    Research and development

We invest in research to keep up with ink technology, and develop customised formulations with customers who need something the catalogue does not cover.

A converter does not buy a colour once

They buy the same colour, batch after batch, for as long as the pack is on shelf. That is the whole argument for controlling raw materials and testing at every stage.

The alternative is a press stopped mid-run while somebody works out why this drum behaves differently from the last one. So we work closely with customers to understand what they need, and develop the formulation to meet it rather than asking them to make a standard product fit.

Sustainability in the plant

We are committed to reducing our environmental impact, using eco-friendly materials and sustainable practices in how we make ink. Our manufacturing sites are designed with that in mind.

  • Reducing waste
  • Recycling materials
  • Renewable energy sources

Our water based range exists for the same reason. Where the substrate can take water in, water is the better carrier, and volatile organic compound emissions fall with it.

Need something the catalogue does not cover?

Colour matching and formulation development are part of what we do, not a special request. Start with the colour you need to hit.
